Sedimentary Rock
Sedimentary rocks occur when layers of organic and mineral deposits solidify and cement under significant pressure and heat. While sandstone, limestone, and alabaster are dense and heavy, they are generally more porous and permeable than other types of stone. Due to their surface nature, rocks of this type deteriorate quicker than other types and are much more likely to react to environmental agents of deterioration like moisture, molds, and handling. Skin oils can even damage these stones, so sedimentary conservation requires additional conservation strategies.
